Check Your Oil: A Reminder to Let God Renew Your Heart

I had the oil in my car changed the other day. It wasn’t anything dramatic, just one of those routine tasks we all know we’re supposed to do. My mechanic came to my home, changed the oil, placed a new sticker on my windshield, and reminded me when I’d need to do it again. I was aware of the sticker, but this time I found myself wondering why it mattered so much. So I asked.

He explained that over time, oil collects debris, tiny particles, dust, residue you can’t see but that slowly affect how the engine runs. He also told me that cars naturally burn some oil. When the level gets low, a warning light comes on, and you add more oil. That helps because it replaces what was lost, but it doesn’t remove the contaminants that have been building up in the old oil. Eventually, the oil has to be drained and replaced with clean oil so the engine can keep running the way it was designed to.

So of course, the way my mind works I thought about how similar this was to our lives.

We all carry debris. Old hurts, quiet worries, disappointments we never fully processed, grief that settles into the corners of the heart, exhaustion that clings even after a good night’s sleep. Sometimes we notice our own warning lights such as fatigue, irritability, discouragement and we try to add a little more rest, a little more determination, a little more strength. And while those things help, they don’t always remove the residue that has built up over time.

What I loved the most was that my mechanic came to me. He didn’t wait for me to show up at a shop somewhere waiting for my turn, but he met me where I was.

And isn’t that exactly what Jesus does?

Jesus comes to us in the middle of our cluttered hearts and weary days. He doesn’t simply ask us to empty ourselves of our burdens. He gently removes what has become harmful and replaces what has been lost with His peace, His strength, His grace, and His love. He knows what debris has collected in us. He knows what needs to be drained out and what needs to be poured back in.

That little sticker on my windshield is no longer just a reminder for my car. It’s a reminder for me. Renewal is wisdom. And the beautiful truth is that God never asks us to keep running on empty or with contaminated hearts. He invites us to pause, to let Him clean out what no longer serves us, and to receive what we need for the road ahead.

Maybe it’s time for all of us to check our “oil” and to notice the warning lights in our lives, to let Jesus meet us where we are, and to allow Him to refresh the places in us that have been running too hard for too long.

Psalm 23:3

“He restores my soul.”
